Barton Creek Greenbelt Invasive Species Removal Event
An invasive species is described as a species that is not native to a specific location (an introduced species), and that has a tendency to spread to a degree believed to cause damage to the environment, human economy or human health. In the case of the Barton Creek greenbelt, there are several occurring and pesky invasive species. For this event, we will be concentrating on two species that are predominant in this particular area. These being privet (Ligustrum lucidum) and heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica). Both are commonly occurring escaped landscaping plants.
Invasive species along the greenbelt can disturb the natural diversity and discourage the growth of native plants. Help us to control these invasive plants and restore biodiversity to the greenbelt! As Adopt-a-Creek partners, SBCA looks after the stretch of the Barton Creek greenbelt beginning at the 360 trailhead. This is the area we’ll focus on, covering as much area as we can in the time allotted.
Please bring your own water bottle, and dress in long sleeves and pants, as we will be walking through areas with poison ivy. Also if you have a favorite pair of work gloves bring those as well!
SBCA is co-sponsoring this event with our friends at Keep Austin Beautiful (KAB) and will have plenty of tools and equipment. There will also be staff from KAB on site to help educate us as to the correct methods to effectively remove these invasive species. Hope you can join us as land stewards of this beautiful area!
