Johnny Mnemonic

Johnny Mnemonic

Date: 01/06 | Time: 8:55 PM | Location: Alamo Drafthouse Lakeline

Keanu Reeves has a lot on his mind in this cyber thriller.

For our Hindsight Is 20/20 series, we’re going back to some of our favorite films that were underappreciated in their time.

Before having a high-tech computer plugged into his brain in the sci-fi action classic THE MATRIX, universally-agreed-upon best person Keanu Reeves had a high-tech computer plugged into his brain in 1995’s techno-thriller JOHNNY MNEMONIC. Only this one was extra high-tech because it involved a sick mini-disc. Not even a normal-sized disc. A small one. Because future.

Adapted by William Gibson from his own short story, JOHNNY MNEMONIC tells the story of a data courier (Reeves) living in the distant future of 2021 who has an important data package loaded into his brain and set to explode. But a lot of dangerous people, from giant corporations to yakuza killers, want what he’s carrying in his head, and they’ll stop at nothing to keep him from making it to his destination.

A film that “predicts” the future in a very Windows 95 kind of way, JOHNNY MNEMONIC is a bonkers, pre-Y2K thriller that serves as something of a precursor to JOHN WICK but throws in a cyborg dolphin and Dolph Lundgren as a street preacher assassin for good measure.

The Thin Man

Home For The Holidays: The Thin Man

Date: 12/27 | Time: 7:30PM – 9:30PM | Location: Austin Film Society

Home for the Holiday Series: The Thin Man

The holidays are a period of travel for many of us as we venture to far-off homes and hearths. For some of us though, Austin is our home, and we are staying home for the holidays. With that in mind, we are presenting some of our favorite Hollywood holiday classics on the big screen.

WIlliam Powell and Myrna Loy star as one of the screen’s most effervescent couples as they navigate a Christmas in New York and try to solve a murder in this adaptation of Dashiell Hammett’s sly, gin-soaked novel. Pure fun. In 35mm.

Directed by W.S. Van Dyke
